What is Poker

What is poker? It seems like a basic question but think back to before you knew anything about this great card game and the connotations that you had with the game. We are going to try and explain the details of the game in as easy of a way as we possibly can, and then provide more links to other areas of our site that will be more game specific and detailed.

Poker is a game in which players play with either fully or partially exposed cards to make wagers and try and win the pots. The poker player can either win the pot by having the best hand or else by making a bet that is uncalled by the other players at the poker table.

There are many different types of variations of the game of poker and different ways to get the action started. In casinos the house assigns a dealer and then moves the button to the spot on the table which designates who they are dealing for. If you are playing in a home game you are more than likely going to pass the deal and deal the cards yourself.

The forced bets that start the action are called antes or blinds. A blind is used in Texas Hold em, where the two players sitting on the left of the dealer have to put a nominal sum in the pot in relation to the bet sizes in order to start the action. An ante is the amount that every player at the table must add to the pot before the deal. Why have antes and blinds? These forced bets create a need for action, or else players could just sit back and wait for the best hands possible in order to make any bets at all.

There are going to be a series of betting rounds that follow. The dealer goes around the table in a clockwise fashion waiting for the players to either check or bet, or if there is already a bet on the table the player can fold, call, or raise. A check is a pass at betting, a fold means they do not wish to match a bet on the table, a call is to equal that bet, and a raise means to increase the bet to a higher level.

There are a number of different poker games played in bars, houses, and casinos across the country. The most popular are draw poker, in which each player receives a certain number of cards and they can then replace one or more of these cards a certain number of times after a certain number of betting rounds. Stud poker is another popular variation in which you can not draw, but there are betting rounds that come after each card is given to the players. If a player folds he will receive no more cards and will be out of the hand. The most popular current forms of poker are hold ‘em variations. Players in hold ‘em use community cards to combine with the cards that they personally hold in their hand to make the best possible combinations. Your hole cards are two in Texas hold ‘em and four in Omaha hold ‘em. Right now these are two of the most popular forms of poker in casinos across the country.

More articles will be coming in order to help our site visitors to learn as much about poker as possible, thus winning more money from the other players at the table.
