Baseball Picks & Predictions: Chicago White Sox at Kansas City Royals
Written May 5, 2009 by Jordan Haimowitz
The White Sox are 12-13 on the year and are currently on a three-game losing streak. When breaking down this team’s numbers, you’ll see that they have not performed that badly. They hit .260 as a team with a combined 26 home runs and 105 RBIs. Carlos Quentin has showed good power, but an inconsistent average. Paul Konerko is off to a good start, which is a rare thing for him, hitting .300 with three homers and 18 RBIs. Jim Thome has been decent as well as Jermaine Dye. For them to be near .500 as a team with their best player, Alexei Ramirez, playing very poorly is encouraging. The pitching staff has not performed as expected, and if Chicago has any chance of keeping pace in their division that must change. They look to end their losing streak tonight as they send Gavin Floyd to the mound. This season, Floyd is 2-2 with a 5.52 ERA through his first five starts. Those numbers are a bit misleading, as he got rocked by Toronto in one of his starts to balloon his ERA. He opened the season against Kansas City, and pitched very well, going seven innings, allowing two runs on six hits while striking out nine batters. In three starts last season, Floyd went 1-2 with a 3.72 ERA. Once again these are not fantastic numbers, but it shows he did not get much run support in these games. That has potential to change tonight. Tuesday’s MLB odds are posted and they show the Royals -127 against the White Sox, and a total of 9.5 runs.
The first place Kansas City Royals. Man, does that sound weird or what? KC is 15-11 and are on a three-game winning streak. Zack Greinke has been abnormal, going 6-0 in his first six starts with an ERA of 0.40. He has been a force that nobody wants any part of. This team supplies a good balance of RBI production as John Buck, Billy Butler, Coco Crisp, David Dejesus, Jose Guillen and Mike Jacobs all have 10 or more RBIs. Crisp came over from Boston and has gave this team some grit and spunk. He is a great fielder with experience and can provide the occasional pop. Tonight’s starter is Kyle Davies, who defeated Floyd in the 2009 opener, going seven innings allowing three hits on no runs. He also struck out eight batters. For the season he is 2-1 through his first five starts with a 4.85 ERA. His last start of the season came against Toronto, however, where he got hit pretty hard. The Royals must come out and play with energy in this game as Chicago is filled with veterans who have pride and play for a manager who is looney tunes. So staying hungry will be this young team’s task.W ill Kansas City make a statement tonight and let everybody know they are for real, or is this hot start just some nice treat? I think I have an idea.
Haimo’s Hot Notes: The White Sox are 6-13 in their last 19 games as an underdog. The Royals are 16-5 in their last 21 games as a favorite. KC is 5-11 in their last 16 Tuesday games. Look for Alexei Ramirez to break out of his early season funk tonight and I predict Thome will take one deep. The White Sox are a decent team who are getting odds tonight. When looking at picking a good game you must always remember it’s important to find good value. This game doesn’t give you good value, it gives you great value. This is not only my TUESDAY UNDERDOG SPECIAL (I’ve hit my last three underdogs), It is my BEST BET and ONLY bet of the day. Load the boat with me and lets end this little slide we are on.
Betting Line: Chicago White Sox +117/Kansas City Royals -127
Jordan’s Pick: Chicago White Sox +117
A 1-2 night last night as the Braves decided to lay an egg in the latter part of the game. Vazquez was cruising along with a 3-0 lead and then before you know it the Mets have a 4-3 lead with a couple of two run homers by David Wright and Carlos Beltran. We once again his out UNDERDOG SPECIAL as the Phillies clobbered the Cards 6-1 which left us two runs short of hitting our OVER 8.5 Runs. So a marginal loss on the day. Tonight we have one play which you just read. To say it is a strong one is a drastic understatement. White Sox 8 Royals 3 (ESTIMATE ONLY).
