MLB Picks: Chicago White Sox at New York Yankees

Written August 30, 2009 by Jordan Haimowitz

white-sox-yankees-picksThe White Sox are fading away very quickly of this AL Central race. After having high expectations for the second half of this season due to the acquisitions of ace pitcher Jake Peavy and versatile 2-time all star outfielder Alex Rios. The result so far is that Peavy had an injury setback and has not yet made an appearance for his new team and Rios has been even worse then he was with Toronto in the first half of the season. Jermaine Dye leads his team in home runs with 24 while adding 71 RBIs, of late though Jermaine has struggled with the bat and his fielding isn’t exactly gold glove caliber either. Alexei Ramirez and Jim Thome has not performed well this year which has really set this team back. Paul Konerko has been Chicago’s only consistent bat while rookie Gordon Beckham is probably the only one right behind him. Konerko is hitting .280 with 23 home runs and 76 RBIs. AJ Pierzynski is hitting for a good average at .315 with 13 homers and 38 RBIs but the issue with him is that he goes through stretches where he is great and others when he can’t make contact. So as you can see the White Sox have great talent at the plate but haven’t strung it all together, today though they will hit well. On the mound for the White Sox is veteran Freddy Garcia. He has made only two starts this season and has gone 0-1 with a 6.75 ERA. Clearly not enough outings to state situational stats for this season. However, the concern I would have if I am manager Ozzie Guillen is that Freddy has not thrown nearly as hard as he used to so far this year and the lefty power hitter for the Yanks will look to tee off on his fastball. I expect Chicago to touch up Joba today but whether or not they’ll score enough will be up to Garcia.  Sunday’s MLB odds have the Yankees as -240 favorites against the White Sox with an over/under set for 10.5 runs.

The Yankees put on a clinic yesterday in a what was a brutal annihilation of the Chicago White Sox winning 10-0. Alex Rodriguez hit his 23rd home runs of the season while both Derek Jeter and Robinson Cano had three hit games. The real story though was not the offensive explosion by the Yanks but that pitchers Sergio Mitre and Chad Gaudin combined for a one hit shutout. Mitre and Gaudin both had ERAs over 5.00 headed into yesterdays game. In reference to the season numbers, where shall I start. Derek Jeter is hitting .333 with 17 home runs and 60 RBIs on the season and is having one of the better years of his career. MVP candidate Mark Teixeira is hitting .283 collecting 31 homers and 97 RBIs. Robinson Cano is having an excellent bounce back season hitting .315 with 21 homers and 70 RBIs. You add Johnny Damon, Jorge Posada and A-Rod to the list of stars and you have on heck of a potent offense. Joba Chamberlain takes the mound today and will look to bounce back from last starts horrible performance. On the season Joba is 8-4 with a 4.34 ERA. At Yankee Stadium Chamberlain has been poor going 3-3 with a 5.35 ERA in 14 starts. This will be his first start against the White Sox this season. We all saw how the extra rest hurt Joba’s mechanics and rhythm. Look for much of the similar today as he will get touched up early and then go into his usual childish antics. However, the bats behind him are so dominant he may just be taken off the hook yet again.

Haimo’s Hot Notes: The White Sox are 3-8 in their last 11 games overall. The Yankees are 7-3 in their last 10 games overall. The Over is 4-2 in the last 6 times the two teams have met. You have a veteran pitcher making his third start of the season against a killer offense and a kid pitcher coming off a terrible start pitching in his home stadium where his ERA is 5.35. The OVER here is a great play as I expect it to clear 11 runs by the 6th inning.

Jordan’s Free Pick: Chicago White Sox/New York Yankees Over 10.5 (+100)

Jordan’s Premium  Picks: A Saturday delight we had going 3-1 in my plays. Another BEST BET in the books as a win as the UNDER 10 runs in the Tribe/O’s game hit as did the Brewers RL making it a sweep on the diamond. We split on the gridiron hitting the UNDER in the Colts/Lions game but missing on the Raiders as they got smoked by Drew Brees and the Saints. None the less a day/night of profit as I fully expect the same today.  Pick up Sunday’s Guaranteed Package!
