MLB Picks: Chicago White Sox vs New York Yankees

Written August 28, 2009 by Jordan Haimowitz

white-sox-yankees-picks-082809The White Sox salvaged the last game of their four game series yesterday against the Red Sox as they pounded young starter Junichi Tazawa. However, they did drop three of the four games and currently trail the Tigers by four games for the AL Central lead. Some bright spots for the Chi Sox have been Paul Konerko and rookie Gordon Beckham. Konerko has raised his average to .278 on the season and has collected 23 home runs (one behind Dye for team lead) and 76 RBIs which leads his team. Gordan Beckham is the most likely rookie of the year, he is hitting .284 with eight homers, 47 RBIs and six stolen bases in only 264 at bats. Jim Thome, A.J. Pierzynski and Jermaine Dye will need to swing hot/power bats for the rest of the season if this team plans on catching Detroit. On the mound tonight for Chicago is Mark Buehrle who is 11-7 with a 3.92 ERA this season. Most people think of Buehrle and they remember his no hitter, however, he has given up four runs or more in five of his last six starts (four of those starts he gave up five runs or more). On the flip side of that, he is known to be very good in big games and this qualifies as one of those for sure. A situational stat that is worth mentioning is that Buehrle has gone 7-2 with a 3.47 ERA in 13 night starts as opposed to day time outing. In his one outing against the Yankees this season he got simply tattooed lasting 4.1 innings allowing seven runs on 12 hits. So, while most people will be spotting that stat line and jumping on the under, I wouldn’t be so quick to do that. This is a do or die series for the White Sox as they can not afford to drop further behind Detroit as stated above. Look for Jim Thome to have a very big game tonight and for Scott Podsednik to be a big factor on the base paths. Chicago will come to play and Buehrle will pitch well.  Friday’s MLB lines show the Yankees -230 against the White Sox with an over/under of 9 runs.

The New York Yankees are coming off their first series loss in what seems to be forever. It was the White Sox though who took three of four games against them back on July 30th-August 2nd. The Bronx Bombers are led by in my eyes the MVP front runner Mark Teixeira who is hitting .285 with 31 home runs and 95 RBIs. The Captain (Derek Jeter) is having one of his best seasons yet hitting .333 with 16 homers and 59 RBIs. Both Johnny Damon and Robinson Cano have 20+ homers and 65+ RBIs on the season. All of these numbers to post with out including Alex Rodriguez and what he can do. So, I conclude the Yankees can hit, a real breaking news story, but lets be real here, they have the best players money can buy. On the mound for the Yanks tonight is CC Sabathia who is quietly entering the CY Young talks with a record of 15-7 and a 3.59 ERA. Sabathia has 10 of his 15 wins on the road as his run support at home has been remarkably bad. In five August starts, C.C. has gone 5-0 with a 2.65 ERA. Now, this is the same situation as Buehrle’s numbers. Expect Sabathia to throw his worst game since the break. In his only start against Chicago he went 7 innings allowing 5 runs on 10 hits (two of them being homers). The only reason he got the win is because Buehrle was even worse. Chicago has left handed batters to tee off at this joke of a stadium to match what the Yanks have to throw out there. Notes below.

Haimo’s Hot Notes: The White Sox are 6-16 in their last 22 road games. The Yankees are 19-7 in their last 26 Friday games and 50-21 in their last 71 home games. Hold the phone though, I smell the stench of a trap. The Yankees go through periods like this every year in the second half. Buehrle is a big game pitcher in a game they so desperately need. Not only do I like Chicago (A) here but i like them to take this series.

    Absolutely horrible advice and breakdown!

The ‘Enjoy The Winner’ slogan is tossed around too cheaply as of late.

Tracking more free pick winners than costly “Best Bets.”

Moving in another direction that wins.
