Why Bet Super Bowl Props
Written January 30, 2009 by Jack Jones
During every Super Bowl bettors who are watching from all over the world will have more riding on the big game than just who is going to end up the winner. Every play and statistic is important because there are so many prop bets being wagered by fans and professional bettors everywhere.
Prop bets are a great way to add fun to the game, and to help you make some additional money by beating the books. No other game during the season can you put money on so many different game situations and root for so many different outcomes.
Some prop bets are crazier than others. The Hilton is offering 10,000-to-1 odds that the Steelers end up with exactly four points, only possible if they record two safeties. But hey, a few years ago a guy came over from California to bet hundreds of dollars are the 100-to-1 odds the books were laying on Carolina to score exactly 29 points, and the final ended up being 32-29, giving this guy tens of thousands of dollars in profits.
The sportsbooks around Las Vegas take anywhere from 15-20% to 50% of all Super Bowl betting action on prop bets. This is a big business that became popular about 15 years ago when there were a series of blowout wins and big favorites. With the high NFL point spreads leading to less of an audience and less gambling, the books responded with the prop bets to keep everyone’s interest.
However, prop bets are more than just a way to have some extra fun on the game. Many professional gamblers will put more down on these than they will on the side and total of the game. If you feel like you know how the game will play out, then there are lots of options to beat the sportsbooks. For instance, if you think Pittsburgh gets out to a big lead, look for Willie Parker to carry the ball more and rush for more yards, if you think Pitt will be behind, you want to take the UNDER on both of those bets.
