Wisconsin Fresno State Predictions
Written September 10, 2008 by Jack Jones
A great game should be in store when two top-25 teams take the field this weekend when the Wisconsin Badgers head west to take on the Fresno State Bulldogs on Saturday, September 13th, 10:30 PM EST. Jack Jones takes a look at the college football odds on this game, which shows Wisconsin as a one-point favorite over Fresno State and a total set at 50.5.
The Badgers haven’t really had to face a difficult opponent yet as they have romped Akron and Marshall in their first two games. Marshall scored the first 14 points of the game last week, but the Badgers busted loose for 51 straight to close it out. Fresno on the other hand has only played a single game, but it was on the road against a tough Rutgers team. The Bulldogs came out on top 24-7 in the game played on September 1st, but they could have their hands full in this one as the highest-ranked opponent the team has ever beaten was then 10th-ranked Oregon State in September of 2001. Of course, Wisconsin is ranked 10th and Fresno State 21st.
Last week, Wisconsin finished the game with 487 total yards, and even though the rushing game only achieved 4.0 ypc, it did manage to score six touchdowns. PJ Hill was less than dominating, even though he scored twice, he was held to 57 yards on 18 totes. This was one week after 210 yards and two scores in the opener. John Clay carried the ball 11 times for 54 yards and two scores while Allan Evridge passed for 308 yards and a score while not turning the ball over. His main target was Garrett Graham who had two receiving touchdowns on six receptions.
Defensively, things looked worse than they actually were. Marshall had two early touchdowns, but both of the drives started at mid-field. After that, the Badgers held the Herd to just 75 yards on 29 rushes, good for a 2.6 ypc mark. The pass defense did an excellent job as well, intercepting three passes. Now the Badgers are allowing only 15.5 ppg and 305.5 total ypg through two games. Fresno State might have won their first game of the season by a total score of 24-7, but it was much closer than that for most of the game. The Bulldogs scored two late touchdowns with less than seven minutes to go to really put the game out of reach. Running back Ryan Matthews scored all three touchdowns, had 26 totes, and ran for 163 yards. Quarterback Tom Brandstater only completed 11-of-24 passes for 216 yards, while Seyi Ajirotutu led the pass catches with 116 yards on three receptions.
The Fresno State defense did their part, holding Rutgers to only seven points. The only touchdown the Scarlet Knights scored was in the fourth quarter and the team only allowed 106 rushing yards on 3.1 ypc. It certainly helped Marvin Haynes intercepted two passes for the Bulldogs. If you like Fresno State this weekend then bet the +1.5 spread at Bookmaker.
