2009 Champs Sports Bowl Odds: Wisconsin vs Miami
Written December 14, 2009 by Rock Henderson
The representatives of the Champs Sports Bowl have to be ecstatic with the two teams they were able to select for their match-up on December 29th. Wisconsin completed a nine win regular season with a 51-10 beat down of the Hawaii Warriors. They will take a 25th ranking into their bowl game and face off against the 15th ranked Miami Hurricanes. The Canes, on the other hand, were thinking ACC Championship after blazing to a 2-0 conference start. Randy Shannon’s squad fizzled down the stretch, but have put Miami back on the map. Looking at the college football betting lines for the Champs Sports Bowl the Badgers are getting 3 points and the total is set for 58 points.
After being overlooked by the Outback Bowl committee, Wisconsin will be out to prove they belonged in a January 1 bowl game against Miami. The Badgers feature Big 10 offense player of the year John Clay at the running back position. Clay managed to rumble for 1396 yards and 16 scores in his sophomore season. He comes into this matchup with a string of five consecutive games running for at least 100 yards and one touchdown. QB Scott Tolzien struggled against good defenses this season, but performed well enough to throw for 2445 yards and 16 touchdowns with 10 interceptions. The 6-3 signal caller out of Illinois is athletic for his size also and is capable of escaping pressure for nice gains. WR Nick Toon is the Badgers leading receiver, snagging 52 balls for 779 and four touchdowns. The son of former NFL great Al Toon is Wisconsin’s major downfield threat. TE Garrett Graham might be the most versatile player on offense as he moves extremely well for his size. Rated highly by most NFL scouts, Graham caught 45 passes for 547 yards and seven scores. The defensive side of the ball held an explosive Hawaii passing offense to just 10 points in the finale, but they have not been good versus the pass. It will be interesting to see how their secondary holds up against the pass happy Hurricanes. If you bet college football you can now get a $100 match bonus from Bodog with a new account!
It was only a matter of time before “The U” returned to national prominence under the direction of Randy Shannon. Sophomore QB Jacory Harris has had much to do with the turnaround of the program. Harris threw for 3164 yards and 23 touchdowns, but needs to cut down on the interceptions as he was picked off 17 times. Those numbers have made him an early favorite for the Heisman Trophy in 2011. The Canes are not completely one dimensional though as they have a stable of running backs that are capable of putting up big numbers. Graig Cooper sees most of the carries and in turn has rushed for 666 yards and three scores. If Cooper is not in the game, expect Damien Berry to carry the rock as he ran for 587 yards and eight touchdowns. The offense is built around speed and much of that speed is installed at the wide receiver position. Leonard Hankerson is Miami’s most consistent receiver, catching 44 passes for 773 yards and six touchdowns. This game could turn into a high scoring affair as the defense does allow over 22 ppg and have trouble turning their opponent over. That could spell trouble against a ball control offense like Wisconsin.
The Big 10 was horrific in bowl games last year as Iowa was the only team to earn a victory. They have an opportunity to prove all the doubters wrong, but this is a terrible matchup for Wisconsin. Miami is way too fast on both sides of the ball and has the decided advantage in quarterback play. The Canes are actually pretty good against the run and will put up a formidable front against John Clay’s north/south running style.
Recommended Play: Miami -3

Got something to say?

Do not, i repeat DO NOT take any picks from Rock Henderson. This guy will lose you money. He is the worst sports pick giver i have ever witnessed. He will lose over 90% of the time. Find a bum in your city and ask him. You will have better luck that way.
I offer my suggestion of Miami -3 after breaking down the match up. You can always take Wisconsin +3. Go with your gut Nick since you seem to have a wealth of knowledge when it comes to college football. Happy Holidays
