Wisconsin Badgers vs. Penn State Nittany Lions Football Predictions

Written October 8, 2008 by Jason Lowry

This weekend the Big 10 has two of its powerhouses ready to square off when the undefeated No. 6 Penn State Nittany Lions (6-0) head to the always tough Camp Randall Stadium to take on the Wisconsin Badgers, who fell out of the AP top 25 for the first time this season after losing a tough one to the Buckeyes last week at home 20-17. So while Wisconsin has dropped its first two Big 10 games the Nittany Lions have rolled in theirs, including a 20-6 win at Purdue last weekend. The oddsmakers are playing this one pretty close considering the Nittany Lions are ranked so high, as they come in 5.5 point favorites over the Badgers at Bookmaker.com

The Nittany Lions continue to quietly creep into the top 5, as they continue to just beat up on everyone they play this year. The offense had been lights out to start the season scoring nearly 50 points a game, but that was not the case last week when they were able to score just 20 on Purdue. Quarterback Daryll Clark was solid throwing for 220 yards, but his touchdown on the day came on a 1yd run for Penn States first score. Another guy who was able to get it going was running back Evan Royster, who ran it 18 times for 141 yards and added a score himself. Though the offense didn’t quite have the numbers it was use to it was plenty win, as they have one hell of a defense at their back.

The Nittany Lions defense was all over the field, and all over the Purdue players last week, as they completely shutdown the Boilermakers offense. They gave up just 83 yards on the ground, a little over 150 through the air. The Boilermakers only successful drive came in the 4th quarter when they marched it down the field for a touchdown. The defense was able to get to the quarterback for two sacks, and safety Drew Astorino was able to grab an interception as well. This defense hasn’t really gave much of anything up all season, as Illinois remains the only team to score more than 14 on this unit when they put up 24 in a losing effort. Bet Penn State – 5.5 at Bookmaker.com

Getting to Wisconsin this team has to really be wondering what just happened in the last 2 weeks, as they first let a poor Michigan team storm back and upset the Badgers, and last week they looked like might have had it in the bag, but gave up a late touchdown to quarterback Terrelle Pryor and were unable to answer. The offense has gone into a little slump after the 1st half of the Michigan game, scoring just 23 points in their last 6 quarters. The bad part things will likely get even harder this weekend, when they play Penn State. Though running back PJ Hill has been solid for the Badgers carrying the football, their are a lot of fans wondering why freshman John Clay isn’t getting more touches, as he ran just 10 times last game for 69 yards. Its going to be hard to get any running game going against the Nittany Lions front, so the game could fall into the hands of quarterback Allen Evridge, who was just 13/25 for 147 yards with both a score and an interception.

The Badgers defense has played well over the last couple weeks, and likely good enough to win both games, but they were no match for running back Beanie Wells last week, as he ran 22 times for 168 yards and a score. Penn State can beat you with both the pass and the rush, so it might be one of the toughest matchups the Badgers have faced this season. The Nittany Lions will have no problem with running the ball and eating up the clock, so its going to be very important for this defense to step it up against the run and make Penn State beat them through the air.
