Tiger Woods Odds to Win the Masters

Written April 6, 2009 by Jason Lowry

Woods MastersIt’s not easy winning one major, let alone two, but when you are talking about Tiger Woods you pretty much throw normal out the window and expect amazing things to happen. Its been a long time since Tiger has played in a major, and the game of golf is sure glad to have him back in action, as ratings should sky rocket with this guy in the field. It would seem wise to think that a guy who hasn’t played in an event similar to a major for about 10 months to have some trouble in his first big start back, but again we are talking about Tiger Woods, the guy who found a way to not only play exceptional golf, but also destroy the game of his playing partner, in his 5 shot final round come from behind win against Sean O’Hair at the Arnold Palmer Invitational.

While Tiger looks as though he has his game back and is ready for a great showing at the Masters, Augusta has not been the friendliest of places for Mr. Woods the last few years, as Woods hasn’t won this event since 2005, and by his standards that’s just not good enough. It actually ties the longest he has went in his career without winning the Masters, as Tiger had the same kind of dry spell back through 1998-2000. Woods then responded with 3 wins in 5 years, including back-to-back wins 2001-02. Woods has won the Masters 4 times in his career, and number 5 would be the sweetest of them all, as it would allow him to show everyone he is the same golfer as before, just better.

A big reason Tiger has struggled here over the past few years is his putting, and with so much time over the last year dedicated to this part of his game, because that’s about all he could do with one knee, it looks as though his putting is better than ever, as it carried him to a win at the Arnold Palmer Invitational. So if putting was holding him back the last few years, it could be game over if he putts good this week, as he finished 3rd in 2006 and 2nd each of the last two years. In fact I think putting will decide if Woods wins or not this week, as I think his driving and iron game is ready to go. If Woods starts draining putts like he has since coming back from knee surgery, I don’t know how this guy loses this event. Bet the Masters at Sportsbook.com.

While winning the Masters would be nice and all, if Tiger wins this weekend, it gives him 15 career major wins, just 3 away from tying Jack Nicklaus for the all-time record. The keys for Woods are simple, the knee has to hold up for 4 days of some the most grueling golf of the season and he has to putt well if he wants to win. One other thing to keep your eye on is if Woods gets off to a hot start, you can pretty much put it in the bag that Woods will win, as this guy is the best ever at leading a tournament.
