2011 Wyndham Championship Predictions

What an amazing finish it was at the PGA Championship last week. Keegan Bradley and Jason Dufner needed a playoff to decide who would win the final major of the season. Bradley ended up beating Dufner for one of the most remarkable come backs in a major. After making a triple bogey on 15, Bradley trailed Dufner by 4-shots, but he would birdie two of the final three holes to force a playoff.

The PGA TOUR will keep on moving, as the 2011 season gets ready for its annual stop at the at Sedgefield Country Club in Greensboro, North Carolina for the Wyndham Championship. While the field features a bunch of really good golfers, many of the top players will take this week off to recover from the physical and mental strain of playing in a major event.

One player that will be in the field is defending champ Arjun Atwal, who took home a one-shot win over David Toms with a 20-under 260 four round performance. Taking nothing away from Atwal, but the chances of him defending his title isn’t very good. Oddsmakers seem to agree, as he comes into the tournament at +12500 to win.

For those of you looking to wager on the tournament, here is a look at three guys who I feel really have a great shot at walking away with the trophy this week.

David Toms (+1000) – The 2010 runner-up is the odds on favorite to win this week, and you don’t have to look to far to see why. On top of his strong performance at Sedgefield a year ago, Toms comes into the tournament playing some of his best golf of the season. He has finished in the top 10 in each of the last two weeks, including a T4th last week at the PGA Championship. He is 7th in scoring average, 11th in putting, and 8th in birdies per round.  Easy pick if you want to lay your money on proven veteran.

Charles Howell III (+2200) – Howell III has really put together a great stretch of golf, and I believe this is the week he comes away with his first win of the season. Howell III has made made eight consecutive cuts, including a stretch of three straight tournaments where he finished in the top 5. In his only start at Sedgefield in 2009, he finished T13 and really finished strong with a 63 on Sunday. I look for Howell to open up the tournament with a great couple of rounds and be right there in contention for the win come the weekend.

Lucas Glover (+3000) – The former US Open Champion is showing some great value at +3000 this week. Glover has finished in the top 25 at this event in each of the last three seasons, including a 7th place finish here in 2010. He didn’t have much luck at the PGA Championship, but he is one of those players who can struggle one week and win the next. He did just that earlier this season. Glover missed the cut at the Heritage with a 73-72 on Thursday and Friday, but followed that up with a win at the Wells Fargo Championship, shooting all four rounds in the 60′s.  Definitely worth a look this week at the Wyndham Championship.
