Wyoming NCAA Football Predictions 2009
Written July 1, 2009 by InfoPlays
After a 4-8 season in 2008, including 1-7 in MWC play, the Wyoming Cowboys decided it was time for a new head coach. Dave Christensen was a great hire, but he’s just one of three new names in this conference. Defensively, the Cowboys have the personnel to make some noise, but it will clearly take some time for players to grasp the new system offensively. Offense: Former Missouri offensive coordinator, Dave Christensen, looks to bring some life to an offense that scored just 12.7 points/game in 2008, ranking 119th in the country. Under former head coach Joe Glenn, the Cowboys had fallen out of MWC contention, largely because of a propensity to turn over the football. Wyoming has been through multiple quarterbacks in recent years, and that will be the case again this season with a new QB under center. Last season, three quarterbacks combined to throw 17 interceptions to just 7 touchdowns. Karsten Sween had an outstanding spring camp, but his career has been plagued by turnovers. Dax Crum was suspended for the spring game after transferring from junior college, but Christensen says he’ll be back this fall.
The reputation of Missouri’s spread offense and what was accomplished with ex-Tiger quarterback Chase Daniel, has certainly proven to be a great recruiting tool. As a result, Wyoming landed Austyn Carta-Samuels, one of the more highly rated quarterbacks out on the West Coast. He’ll be competing for time along with junior college transfer Robert Benjamin. Despite the uneasy QB situation, the Cowboys have bigger concerns at running back after losing nearly 2,000 yards rushing in Devin Moore and Wynel Seldon. Junior Darius Terry earned most improved back honors in the spring and is penciled in at tailback. All three starting receivers return, led by senior Greg Bolling. The Cowboys have a veteran offensive line, but there is some rebuilding to be done here after losing a pair of starters.

Defense: All-MWC leader, Ward Dobbs, and his 101 tackles are gone. But Wyoming is well stocked on defense with seven starters back. Second-team All-MWC defensive lineman, John Fletcher, is the leader of this unit after recording 6.5 sacks last season. Linebacker Gabe Knapton is now a third-year sophomore along with Brian Hendricks, who was named the most improved linebacker in the spring.
Brothers Marcell and Tashaun Gipson man the cornerback spots. Tashaun had an interception in the spring game, but most improved defensive back went to strong safety Jamichael Hall, a redshirt junior college transfer. The only staff carryover from last year’s team is Marty English, who got the promotion to defensive coordinator.
