MLB Betting: New York Yankees at Oakland A’s Odds

yankees-as-picks-081809Well, that was certainly a surprise last night. The New York Yankees have been hammering the competition of late. From a four game sweep of the Red Sox to taking three of four from the Mariners, they have been winning by great hitting and stout pitching. Last night though Brett Tomko went five scoreless innings and was helped out by his bullpen who were superb. If the Bronx Bombers believe that they could relax, that this division is wrapped up, I strongly advise them to get a reality check. A-rod continues to suffer from a nagging injury and you see it in his play over the past week. Derek Jeter is having an excellent year and same goes for Mark Teixeira who is a definite MVP Candidate. Johnny Damon has been solid while Melky Cabrera has been a breath of fresh air. New York has the best lineup from top to bottom in baseball.. On the mound tonight is C.C. Sabathia, he is 13-7 with a 3.64 ERA. Since the all-star break he has been even better going 5-1 with a 2.98 ERA. However, tonight he just might slip up. In two starts against the A’s this season he is 1-0 but has a very high 5.93 ERA. Oakland has hit .278 as a team off him and has been very patient taking a lot of pitches. Expect the Evil Empire to score runs tonight but do not count on a usual Yankees blowout. Oakland is feisty and has proved to the league they won’t die and roll over for anybody.  Tuesday’s MLB odds have installed the Yankees as -230 favorites against the A’s with the total set at 8.5 runs.

Good for you Oakland. This is a team who traded their two best players in Matt Holliday and Orlando Cabrera not to mention they have released Jason Giambi who was an utter disaster the second time around.. Yet, they still fight. Adam Kennedy and Catcher Kurt Suzuki lead by example while power hitter Jack Cust leads the team with 16 home runs. Track star Rajai Davis is the teams speed while Ryan Sweeney is hitting well of late. A bunch of no name guys who play as hard as they can, I respect that. On the mound for Oakland is one of their young pitchers in Vin Mazzaro. On the season he is 4-8 with a 5.54 ERA, but don’t look at those numbers and judge this young kid. He has electric stuff and is learning start by start. In his only outing verse the Yankees this season he got smacked around lasting 4.1 innings allowing 6 runs on eight hits, he did strike out seven batters. Now, all signs do point to a similar performance, I on the other hand know when the Yanks look stagnant and go into hitting slides. Expect NY to follow last nights zero run performance with 3-5 tonight tops. Mazzaro will pitch okay while the patience of the A’s and their great base running will help them stay in this game.

Haimo’s Hot Notes: The Yankees are 6-2 in their last eight road games. The Athletics are 2-7 in their last nine games following a win. The Yankees are 9-2 in their last 11 meetings against the Athletics this season. Folks, there is just to much value on the RL here for the home team to pass it up. NY goes through funks sometimes and we have seen them struggle on road trips before. Small plays on both picks listed below. Feel confident in them both while a split is certain at least.
