Baseball Picks: New York Yankees at Seattle Mariners
Written August 15, 2009 by Jordan Haimowitz
The Bronx Bombers moved to 30 games over .500 last night with their 4-2 win over Seattle. Their record is 73-43 on the year. To say they are clicking on all cylinders would be an understatement. The Yanks can win by blowing you out or by grinding out tough fought victories. MVP front runner Mark Teixeira has been everything New York could have hoped for. He is the best fielding first baseman in baseball and a great overall hitter. He is hitting .288 with 30 home runs and 86 RBIs on the season. Now, do keep in mind he plays in a sandbox of a stadium, but none the less, Tex has been a beast. The Captain Jeter has had a fantastic season while guys like Robinson Cano, Jorge Posada and Johnny Damon have been well above average as well. On the mound tonight will be Sergio Mitre for the Bombers, he is 1-1 with a 7.04 ERA in five starts. Not enough time to give away situational stats, but I can tell you his pitches have no movement and are not overwhelming at all. The only was Mitre can succeed if he faces inpatient hitters. Wild is what he is about, not so much in the walks department but more so over the middle of the plate. He misses his location as much as any pitcher I have seen this season. Look for him to get hit hard tonight. Saturday’s posted MLB lines show the Yankees -133 against the Mariners with a total set at 9.5 runs.
A rough two days it has been for Seattle. They fall to the Yankees 11-1 in the opener and lost a 4-2 contest last night, they look to get back into the series tonight with Lucas French on the mound. Since acquiring him from Detroit, French has been decent. His numbers combined with Detroit and Seattle this season show a 2-2 record with a 4..31 ERA. French pitched one game against the Yankees this season as a member of the Tigers and went 5 innings allowing only 1 earned run on 5 hits. Expect no more from him then a decent start tonight. Ichiro Suzuki leads this team hitting .359 from the plate (also leads AL). Russell Branyan leads the Mariners with 27 homers and 68 RBIs while Franklin Gutirrez has been a very big contributor this season. Seattle should be very proud of the season they are having. With very limited talent and not much pitching, they have remained over .500 all this time and still are technically in the wild card hunt. This will be a very tough final two games the series for them. After dropping the first two coming back and getting even one of the final two would be a success. Look for a ton of runs to be scored tonight.
Haimo’s Hot Notes: The Yankees are 36-15 in their last 51 games overall. The Mariners are 6-2 in their last eight Saturday games. The OVER is 8-3 in the last 11 games played in Seattle. Expect a really high scoring affair tonight. Some where along the lines of an 8-6 final. French will get hit while Mitre will get rocked. The Yankees will do what they always and get runs late. Jordan’s Pick: Yankees/Mariners OVER 9.5 (+100)
Jordan’s Premium Picks — Friday night resulted in a 2-2 split as Jordan hit both of his major money plays in the Bo Sox and Rams +3.5. He dropped the small play on KC and got some awful luck in the 49ers game. A night of profit it still was. Saturday we have a slew of games available. Do not miss out as all are GUARANTEED!
