Baseball Odds & Picks: New York Yankees at Boston Red Sox
Written April 24, 2009 by Jordan Haimowitz
The Yankees have had to witness Chien-Ming Wang get blasted beyond anyone’s comprehension. Mark Teixeira, who is making over 20 millions dollars this year, has started the season hitting .222 with 3 home runs and 9 RBIs. Alex Rodriguez is out for at least the first month and Xavier Nady suffered a season ending injury. With all this said, the Bronx Bombers have started the season 9-6 and are currently on a three-game winning streak. Derek Jeter looks superb and continues to be the clutch champion that he always has been. Posada is swinging a nice bat, while Cano looks to be more alive this year. The pitching staff, along with the bullpen has been the wild card for this team. Tonight, they send Joba Chamberlan to the mound, who has gone from a tenacious pitcher who intimidates out of the bullpen, to a soft, whiny and inconsistent starter. Joba has received no decisions in his first two starts while posting a 5.06 ERA. In his last start he received a pounding by the Tribe at home. Last season vs Boston he went 1-0 in two starts with a 3.46 ERA, so that should give the Yankee fans a good stat line to press on. However, I’m not buying last season’s Joba in comparison to the softy it appears he has become. You are witnessing a power relief pitcher being thrown out as a starter. There is no way his intensity will last for the long haul with this work load. His body or arm was not cut out for it. So, this game will not go his way as he is running into a buzz saw. Friday’s baseball odds have the Red Sox -120 against the Yankees and the Over/Under set for 9.5 runs.
The Boston Red Sox are currently 9-6 on the season. They are currently the hottest team in all of baseball, holding a seven game winning streak. The Sox are not led by one player, they run by committee. Jason Bay has 3 homers and 11 RBIs, Mike Lowell has been sharp with 3 home runs and 16 RBIs, and Kevin Youkilis has 4 homers with 12 RBIs, while several others such as Varitek, Ellsbury, Pedroia and Drew have picked up their game since the first week of the year. With Jed Lowrie on the DL they will look to Nick Green to fill that hole (he has a home run and six RBIs in only 11 at bats). The rotation has been very spotty though, very similar to the Yanks (not Wang like though). Dice-K is on the DL after getting rocked in his first few starts, while their ace Josh Beckett has been good, not great. Their best starter so far has been 42 year old Tim Wakefield. With that said, the future of this teams rotation, the man who will be the one called on to pitch the game sevens like last season is Jon Lester, the starter tonight for The Red Sox Nation. While Lester struggled in his first two starts, he is coming off a solid performance against Baltimore where he went 7 innings, allowed no runs on four hits and struck out nine batters. For the season he is 1-2 with a 5.50 ERA. Those stats though won’t fool anybody as we all know they will shrink very fast, starting tonight. Last year Lester was dominating against the Yanks as he went 2-0 in three starts with a 1.19 ERA, striking out 24 batters in 22 innings. Papelbon and Mariano Rivera cancel out as the Sox and Yanks’ bullpen both have big studs and some duds in middle to late relief. Lester will have a big start tonight, check the notes below.
Haimo’s Hot Notes: The Yankees are 6-2 in their last eight games when they are the underdog. The OVER is 7-3 in their last 10 games overall. The Red Sox are 3-7 in their last 10 games against New York. Now, before you go questioning why I would take the Sox and be so confident in doing it with these trends, chew on this: Jon Lester was 11-1 in 17 starts in 2008 in Fenway Park with a 2.49 ERA. Opponents hit a .240 against Lester. BoSox Nation will roar down Yawkey Way Friday night as the Red Sox will take the first game between these two this season.
Jordan’s Pick: Boston Red Sox -120
Fresh off yet another monster night we look to break the bank again on this gorgeous Friday night evening. We had to sweat out our BEST BET last night with the Dodgers -1.5 (+130) as they won 2-0. So that put another premium play in the win column as the UNDER 7.5 in the Tampa/Seattle game cruised with ease, just as expected. I hope everybody was able to cash in on those goods as I smiled wide all night long. My record is beginning to reach major feats as the winning percentage grows daily. With the summer right around the corner, I know I don’t speak for myself when i say some extra pocket cash wouldn’t hurt. Now, lets go gobble that up.
Documented MLB Record:
27-11 OVERALL
10-3 BEST BET (Last night’s premium was Dodgers -1.5 +130)

Nice Pick on the Dodgers even though it was dicey in the 9th with runners on 2nd and 3rd when the final out was recorded.
I like this play, Yankees are struggling with pitching and the hot boston bats are gonna feast. Lester has regained his form and the Yankees bats will be quiet.
