Baseball Picks: New York Yankees at Detroit Tigers
Written April 28, 2009 by Jordan Haimowitz
The 9-10 New York Yankees are on a skid that has NYC in jitters. They went out this off season and spent close to half a billion dollars on four players. They still can’t pitch, they lack power bats and have no chemistry to boot. The Evil Empire spends boat loads of money year-in and year-out, and all they have to show for it is utter disappointment in the club house and sad faces on the fans. The four-game losing streak they are on started this past weekend when they were swept by the fire-hot Red Sox. In all three games Boston showed grit and heart as they trailed at one point in every contest. So while all you Yankee fans that are reading this article and saying to yourself ,”Oh man, not another Yankee Hater”, I’d like you to realize this is just reality. All the money in the world can’t buy a winner. With that said, Robinson Cano is playing lights-out baseball for the Yankees, while Jeter is off to one of his best starts in a long time. Tonight the Bombers welcome back Phil Hughes to the majors. While he struggled so strongly in his last go-round, Manager Joe Girardi needs him to right this ship in the biggest way. Believe me when I tell you, it is not too early to get too far behind in the AL East. I expect Hughes to struggle in his first start, however, I do see the Yanks’ offense showing up tonight. To what extent is yet to be seen. Tuesday’s MLB lines show the Detroit Tigers -108 with the total set for 9.5 runs.
The Detroit Tigers are playing like the championship contenders we all expected them to be last season. They are 11-8 and are currently on a three game winning streak. Miguel Cabrera is campaigning early for an MVP season with 4 home runs and 14 RBIs so far and hitting .380 from the plate. Magglio Ordonez has struggled a bi,t but is coming on as of late, while lead-off man Curtis Granderson has been on fire with 6 home runs and 12 RBIs. The story of the Tigers’ young season though has been third baseman Brandon Inge, who is simply on a tear. Inge has hit 7 home runs, 17 RBIs and is hitting .328 on the young season. They will look to add to their winning streak, relying on the arm of Edwin Jackson, who was acquired from Tampa this off season. Jackson is a young guy with very live arm. He has pitched very well this year, going 1-1 in his first four starts while posting a 2.77 ERA. With the Rays last year he struggled against the Yanks, going 1-3 in six starts. He has started against New York more than any other team. His ERA last year verse them was 5.76. The key tonight will be Curtis Granderson. If the Tigers can get base runners on and frustrate Phil Hughes early, you can count on this being another Yankee loss. I see both offenses scoring runs with the Tigers having a slight edge. Look below.
Haimo’s Hot Notes: The Tigers are 7-2 against the Yankees over the last nine meetings. The OVER is 11-5 in the last 16 games when the Yanks are the underdog. Expect both trends to come through tonight as the Bronx Bombers will continue their downhill slide. There should be runs by the bunches with the Tigers laughing last. Final Score Prediction: Tigers 9 Yankees 7. (ESTIMATED SCORE ONLY, REGISTERED PICKS BELOW)
Jordan’s Picks: Detroit Tigers -108 & Yankees/Tigers OVER 9.5 (OVER IS THE BEST BET)
13-3 BEST BETS
A 2-2 night yesterday as we hit both our Run totals and lost both of our game picks. The Braves had all the chances in the world to win that game. The problem is, when you get picked off at first, leave 10+ runners on base, and get no middle of the order production with the exception of Casey Kotchman, your chances won’t be too good. The UNDER in that game though was a breeze. The Cubs were silenced by a star in Dan Haren. Soriano hit a lead-off homer and that was it for Chicago. We hit the OVER in that game off the bat of Micah Hoffpauir. So, no loss last night as the Cubs was an Underdog. Time to get back to the money making tonight. Lets do it.
