New York Giants NFL Predictions 2009

Written August 18, 2009 by InfoPlays

2009 New York Giants NFL PredictionsThe New York Giants started 11-1 last season before Plaxico Burress shot himself in the thigh. The Giants lost their biggest offensive weapon when that happened, and they finished the season 1-4 in their final five games without Burress. New York will be without him again in 2009, but the Giants feel they are still the favorite to win the NFC East. A powerful running game and a restocked defensive line are two reasons they should be there right until the end. Bet the Giants +160 to win the NFC East at Sportsbook.com. These NFL lines show that New York is right up there with the Eagles as the favorites to repeat.

Offense: Eli Manning will be the face of this franchise for years to come after signing a six-year extension just before the start of the season. He can carry this team with his arm, but too many times it seems they win despite his struggles. When the cold wind starts swirling late in the season, Manning has clearly been at his worst. The Giants will need him more than ever this season because he lacks a true No. 1 receiver. David Carr is the No. 2 with valuable experience as a starter in this league. They drafted Rhett Bomar to compete with Andre Woodson for the No. 3 spot. The “Earth, Wind and Fire” backfield will be without its wind this season because Derrick Ward left for Tampa Bay. Ahmad Bradshaw is ready for a bigger role as the fire and he appears to be more explosive than Ward was. The 6-4, 264-pound Brandon Jacobs is the man in this offense. His combination of power and speed is unparalleled in the NFL, and if he can stay healthy for 16 games he’ll earn his first Pro Bowl berth. New York wants to get their running backs more involved in the passing game, something that has lacked since Tiki Barber retired. Bradshaw might be that guy, if not the Giants are high on fourth-round pick Andre Brown out of NC State.

The Giants still don’t know who their No. 1 receiver will be following the departures of Burress and 13-year veteran Amani Toomer. The best of the bunch is Steve Smith, who needs to improve on getting yards after the catch. Hakeem Nicks was their first-round pick out of North Carolina, but up this this point they say he’s been a bit of a disappointment. Domenik Hixon and Mario Manningham have the speed to be deep threats. Tight end Kevin Boss is sure-handed but struggles to get open. That’s why the Giants drafted Travis Beckham out of Wisconsin. Ramses Barden may be the next Burress considering his 6-6 frame. They took him in round three out of Cal Poly and he set several collegiate records, compiling 50 receiving touchdowns in his career. He makes a big red zone target, something the Giants lacked late last season. Two of the Giants offensive linemen earned Pro Bowl honors last season in center Shaun O’Hara and right guard Chris Snee. They could have sent more, because for 12 games this was the most dominant unit in the NFL. The only concern about this unit heading into 2009 is depth. There are no proven backups for left tackle David Diehl or right tackle Kareem McKenzie. If something were to happen to either of them, New York might have to turn to rookie William Beatty, their second-round pick. Left guard Rich Seubert rounds out the starting five.

Defense: Injuries to the defensive line can also be blamed for the Giants’ collapse down the stretch last season. Justin Tuck, Barry Cofield and Fred Robbins all missed significant time last season. To make sure this doesn’t happen again, the Giants spent millions this season to build a deep and relentless line. They went out and added defensive tackles Rocky Bernard and Chris Canty to join the rotation with Cofield and Robbins. The return of end Osi Umenyiora is a huge bonus after he sat out last season with a knee injury. Mathias Kiwanuka will back up Umenyiora, giving the Giants seven starting-caliber linemen which should keep fresh bodies on the field at all times. The linebackers have been low-impact guys the last few years, but that may change this season with a couple of offseason additions in free agent Michael Boley and second-round pick Clint Sintim. Boley will start on the weak side, while Sintim will likely back up Danny Clark on the strong side, but he’ll be in there on obvious passing situations. Antonio Pierce continues to be a rock in the middle. He should have new life and a chip on his shoulder after his involvement in the Burress incident, which has him primed for a big year.

Corey Webster earned a new contract before free-agency even started, which shows you how highly the Giants think of their starting cornerback. He is the No. 1 guy in a young, but promising secondary. Aaron Ross, a former first-round pick, will be opposite Webster at cornerback. The starting safety positions will likely go to ‘08 first-round pick Kenny Phillips and Michael Johnson. Phillips didn’t make much of an impact last year but he’ll have more of an opportunity in his second season in the league. New York added some valuable experience to the safety position by signing veteran C.C. Brown from Houston.

InfoPlays Prediction: 2nd in the NFC East – The Giants have the build of several Super Bowl teams from year’s past. Their offensive and defensive lines are among the best in the league, and their two-headed running attack of Bradshaw and Jacobs is tough to bring down. New York lacks a true No. 1 at receiver, though, which will allow opposing teams to stack the box, forcing Manning to beat them. This offense is too one-dimensional to be counted as one of the top units in the league, and it will likely prevent New York from repeating as NFC East champs. The Philadelphia Eagles are the team to beat in this division, but it will probably come down to the final two weeks of the season before it’s decided.
