New York Jets 2009 NFL Predictions

Written August 20, 2009 by Nick Scarpa

new-york-jets-2009-predictionsHaving a rookie head coach and quarterback tandem is the new rage in the NFL and the 2009 New York Jets will put the trend to the test. Mark Sanchez is the hotshot rookie QB with all the physical and mental tools to win but an alarming lack of experience. Rex Ryan is the outspoken defensive specialist that has kept the Jets in the media headlines but he has never been a captain of an NFL ball club. Rex Ryan will put his defensive stamp on the ‘Planes but it will take some time for QB Mark Sanchez to develop with his lack of experience. The Jets should finish ahead of Buffalo but will fail to make the playoffs for a 3rd straight year without an impact player on offense.

Sanchez has the skills to be a Pro-Bowler with his ability to lead, scramble and hang tough in the pocket.. In his first year on the job Sanchez will have to make due with a mediocre set of receivers. The running game however is a top-10 NFL unit that is led by a quality 1-2 RB punch in Thomas Jones and Leon Washington. Sanchez has a nice offensive line blocking for him and WR Jerricho Cotchery could develop into a big-play wideout. there are also some young personnel that have plenty of potential and the Jets could actually improve their 23rd ranked scoring offense from a year ago.

Last season NY ranked 14th in points allowed and made an impact addition in the off-season by signing LB Bart Scott from Baltimore. The Jets 3-4 defense relies on gap control and DT Kris Jenkins is the bull in the middle that frees up the LB‘s, Vernon Gholston and David Harris. Rex Ryan presence should make the Jets passive defense from a year ago a more aggressive unit that goes after the QB. The secondary is a top-10 NFL unit with a future star in CB Darrelle Revis. Special Teams has an explosive element with KR Leon Washington but the punting situation is a question mark.
