Zach Johnson 2008 Odds to Win the Masters

golf

The defending Masters champion has the honors of passing on the green jacket that comes along with winning the Master, but last years winner Zach Johnson is hoping that he can wait another year for that, as he can avoid that honor for the time being if he is able to defend his title. While you might think that this task is nothing to special, it has only been done 3 times since the Masters got underway. The most recent was Tiger Woods who won the Masters in 2001 and 2002. So Johnson has the chance of joining Tiger, Nick Faldo, and the great Jack Nicklaus. While Johnson came out of nowhere to win in 2007, there will be many watching him in 2008. Even with a win in 2007, his odds are nowhere close to the favorites coming in this weekend. As matter a fact you could even consider him a long shot to win this weekend with his odds. Here is our look at why Johnson could win back-to-back Master titles, and why he will have to wait to prove his first major championship wasn’t a fluke.Zach Johnson’s Odds to Win 2008 Masters 50/1 at Bodoglife.com

Why He Will Win:

Johnson started off 2008 pretty slow and just didn’t seem to have things clicking the way he wanted. He just might be on the way of turning that around with a good showing at the CA Championship where he had his best finish of the season with a tie for 9th. The fact that Johnson is the defending champion is reason enough to give the guy some consideration to do well again in 2008. His plan of attack in 2007 was staying away from the par 5’s in two, and laying up creating opportunities with his 3rd shot and avoiding disaster from going for it in two. Johnson has the ability to manage the course and use it to his advantage. If he can create a solid game plan and perfect it as he did in 2007, he chances of winning jump dramatically. Johnson doesn’t hit the ball a mile off the tee, but can be deadly accurate in hitting the fairways. He will not only have to be deadly off the tee but from fairway to green, If he gets some putts to fall look out for a surprise repeat at Augusta.

Why He Won’t Win

The main reason we don’t think Johnson has what it take to defend his title, is that he has yet to show any signs since his Masters victory that he is ready to move up into the elite class of golfers. After winning the Masters last year, Johnson went on to finish tied for 45th at the US Open, 20th at the British Open, and failed to even make the cut at the PGA Championship. He has shown signs of the ability to be a consistent threat, but just hasn’t lived up to the expectations after winning the green jacket last year. With Augusta being one of the longest courses on Major championship play, his 192nd rating in driving distance will be a very tough factor to overcome. One other reason that has us thinking twice on this guy, is that his putting has really dropped from 2007, so unless he is able to find his touch this weekend, it could be a long weekend for the lasted green jacket winner.
